Dark Patterns: User Interfaces Designed to Trick People

Posted: Wednesday, April 6, 2011

A very interesting talk by Harry Brignull on user Interface design of ecommerce websites. His presentation Dark Patterns: User Interfaces Designed to Trick People discusses some unethical and black-hat methods using subtle UI (or lack of it) to trick people to pay more for a service or unwanted item.

With the surge of e-commerce here in the Philippines like airline flight bookings, flower deliveries, and even fast food orders, more and more transactions are done online with just a click of button. I’m sure we have our share of “evil” designers in to trick people of their hard earn money.

Do you know any Philippine website that employs a confusing user interface? or one that intentionally obscures pertinent information that the buyer should know beforehand? share them in the comments.
